Induction & EPD - General Teaching Council NI

Induction & EPD

Induction and EPD play a crucial role in the professional formation of teachers in Northern Ireland.

All newly qualified teachers are required to complete Induction and Early Professional Development (EPD). It is the responsibility of your school and Teacher Tutor to send a copy of the letter confirming the successful completion of Induction to GTCNI:

The Registration Team
The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland
3rd Floor Albany House
73 – 75 Great Victoria Street

The school should retain a copy for its records, provide you with a copy of the letter and send a copy to the Education Authority’s Induction and EPD Team.

Records for teachers, who completed Induction prior to September 2009, are held by the Teachers’ Salaries and Administration Branch of the Department of Education:

Support for Induction & EPD

The Education Authority (EA) is the lead partner providing support for both Induction and Early Professional Development (EPD). They will liaise with you and your Teacher Tutor in school and provide courses for Induction Teachers, EPD Teachers and Teacher Tutors.

The EA Beginning Teacher programme provides a range of support for teacher completing their Induction and EPD Year 1 and EPD Year 2.

The EA website provides more information for newly qualified teachers and the EA Induction and EPD Team can be contacted by phone: 028 3831 0920 or email:

You can also download the EA Beginning Teacher ‘Subbing’ leaflet.

The Induction requirements are set out in ‘The Teacher Education Partnership Handbook‘ on the Department of Education website.
